Holding On To The Championship Lead at The Home of British Motorsport
It’s always special to race at Silverstone!
As a British racing driver it holds some kudos to race on the same circuit as the Formula One greats and as a British Racing Drivers Club (BRDC) Rising Star it carries some weight to race in front of the members watching from the BRDC Clubhouse.
Silverstone was also made more special this year because I had a chance to win the championship there (although it was highly unlikely going into the weekend). A number of Clements guests were also attending the event so it was important to put on a good show!
After qualifying 4th and 3rd for the weekends races I was hopeful of two podium finishes and an extended championship lead going into the final race meeting of the year at Brands Hatch. The first race really didn’t go to plan, I lost a few places at the start but was settling into the race and was with the front pack. On lap 5 I suddenly got a hit in the left rear which pitched me into a spin and the gravel trap. Unfortunately, that was the end of my race (report here) and a big dint to my championship advantage!
The second race started much better and towards the end of the first lap I was in the running for 3rd place. Unfortunately, contact saw me run wide at the end of the lap which meant I dropped back to 7th position and lost a lot of ground on the leaders. I was able to get back through to cross the line in 4th place which was a good result considering where we ended lap one. The car felt fantastic and we had great speed! (Race report)
Now we have just one event to go, two test sessions, a qualifying and two races, that’s all that separates me from becoming the 2018 Renault UK Clio Cup Champion! I hold the race lap record at Brands Hatch so I know I can go well there. The championship was the goal at the beginning of the season and now I am so close to being able to realise my aim! Fingers crossed we have a much smoother ride at Brands Hatch and we can come away with the big trophy!
